Drone photography Drones! Several meanings of that word. A continuous unpleasant noise – all he could hear was a distant drone from the machine. An autonomous, or controlled unmanned flying machine. More up to date drones have both good and bad uses. Military drones for instance, you may not want to be under one. Interest in civilian and Hobbyist drones has taken off recently, no pun intended. Drones can be bought off the shelf, ready to fly, or if you’re keen enough, you can build one from scratch. PHOTO The author has done both. There are rules and regulations to abide by when owning and flying drones. If your drone or model aircraft weighs 100g to less than 250g and has a camera, you should get an Operator ID. If it does not have a camera, you can choose whether or not to get an Operator ID. There is a yearly fee. Some drones are classed as toys. Do check on this. CAA Civil Aviation Authority Toy drones are best flown in your back yard or garden, on the calmest of days. Many come with simple flight controllers; more pricey ones can have flightpaths programmed into them. The likes of drones produced by a company called DJI make many versions of drones, if money is no object, you can buy one that will do things that were unthinkable even a few years ago. Several members of the Photographic Society have a drone and use them – weather, wind and CAA regulations permitting, up and down the country, Birds eye views of your local area can provide viewpoints that have to be seen to be believed.
