With Melbourne Photographic Society’s 100th anniversary fast approaching there’s plenty of interesting history being unearthed in preparation for the celebrations.

Take for instance the below letter written at the time of our golden jubilee in 1971. It outlines the formation of the society and some key events from our first exhibition in 1924 to the society sending prints of local scenes, via invitation of the local parish council, to the city of Melbourne, Australia.

It’s also interesting to read our Silver Jubilee dinner in 1946 was held at The Melbourne Hotel, now called Harpurs, a place we still drink today after our weekly meetings. I wonder what the members back then would make of the photography world of today?
