Welcome to the new 2018/19 season!

With our new 2018/19 season starting this Thursday (20th September), we wanted to let you know we’ve just up-dated our shiny new programme, you can check it out by clicking here.

As well as the usual favourites we’ve some exciting new topics being covered by our guest speakers such as wedding photography (get prepared, someone is sure to ask you to shoot theirs at some point!), drone photography and shooting video with your camera.

It’s sure to be another interesting, fun and educational year at Melbourne Photographic Society, so come along and say hi! we look forward to seeing you.

Melbourne World War One Centenary Photographic competition

Melbourne World War One Centenary Photographic competition

To contribute to Melbourne’s remembrance of The Armistice Century, Melbourne Photographic Society have launched a photographic competition with the theme of “Comradeship”.  We are hoping for hundreds of entries, of which the winning and highly commended entries will be selected to be on exhibition on 27th October at Melbourne Assembly Rooms.  There will be a prize of a £50 voucher for the winner to spend at the photographic retailer of their choice. 

The competition is open to all local photographers.  We are not looking for photographical technical excellence, just for creativity around the theme of Comradeship.  The theme is open to individual interpretation, but entries must have the Armistice centenary at their heart.

The deadline for submissions will be Friday 12th October 2018, with the winners notified on 19th October 2018. The winning entry and highly commanded entries will be on display at the Melbourne Assembly Rooms on Melbourne’s Remember day – Saturday 27th October 2018.

Members Update, Late July 18

We are now entering that period of time, when many members start to take their holidays and for some the opportunity to get travelling with their camera, and to capture some different pictures. Have a great time, and I look forward to seeing some of this work in the coming months.  I have just a brief update on some of the events on the programme.

Peak District Heather 9th August.

The planned evening field trip has been cancelled. Apologies, the leader has picked up an injury, that makes walking on rough terrain somewhat of a  challenge. In addition the moors are tinder dry at present, we have all seen the news reports on the moorland fires. It will be back in next years summer programme.

Street Photography , Matlock Bath. Sunday 9th September

We are looking for a member to coordinate the event. The location is ideal for such activities, and the opportunities are enormous on a dry Sunday. If you have the time to arrange the logistics etc please let Paul or John Z know please.

Melbourne Art Festival, 14th to 16th September

The annual exhibition is being arranged this year by Tony Pedley, our exhibitions secretary. We are looking for members to provide prints for display and to assist on the evening of Friday 14th , with setting up the display, and during the weekend, on the stand, to welcome visitors. You don’t need to be there all of the time, but just for a time slot of 1 to 4 hours. If you are available to assist  please let Tony know.

Late Autumn Field Trip, Whitby November 23rd

Alan May is organising a weekend away in Whitby date November 23rd with 2 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal for £140.  The hotel rooms are filling up quite fast.  If you are interested in going could you please let Alan know by 17th August.  There are plenty of photographic opportunities in Whitby alone, that suit all genres of photography. Some of you may have noticed the societies website was down for several days. There appears to have been an issue with the hosts configuration, that meant you were seeing a different website when trying to reach our website. This is now resolved. Thank you for the various members of the society who reported this, and assisted with the diagnosis of the fault.

 

Melbourne Carnival – Saturday 14th July – Assistance Required.

We are coming up to the First exhibition of the year – The Melbourne Carnival on Saturday 14th July.

This gives us our chance to promote the club and show off our work, to improve local awareness and to help gain new members.

To make sure this runs smoothly we need club members to volunteer their time (1 – 2 hours) to assist with this exhibition.  Again, we have been requested to man the gates . Manning the gates is a worthwhile job, as a club we receive a cash award for doing this role that goes towards our annual fund raising.  We are looking for the following:-

  1. To help set the stand between 9:30 – 11:30hrs.
  2.  To man the stand between 12:00 – 17:00hrs
  3. To man the Main Gate 12:00 – 14:00hrs
  4. Then dismantle the stand after 17:00hrs and return boards etc to Thomas Cook hall.

We also need you to submit your images to display. We are arranging a collection of your prints at Harpers on Thursday 12th July at 21:00hrs.  If you cannot make it to Harper’s you can please let us know by email and we can make alternative arrangements. If you could also indicate if you are happy for the photos to be sold on the day, it would be appreciated

June 7th Bowls Night at Kings Newton Bowls Club 19:00 hrs start

This is a social evening you can bring your partners too.  Come and try your hand at a game of bowls we will have some of the members from the bowls club to assist us in the art of bowls you never know we may have a little match for fun.

The bar will be open and we will be running a raffle to aid with the fund raising.  If you can provide a raffle prize that would be great.

If you don’t want to play bowls bring your camera and take some images and watch from the sidelines.
