How to Session, 28th Sept 2017
This week’s “How To” Session is based around how to prepare pictures for competitions , and covers all the basics throughout the cycle from cropping, printing and mounting, through to what competitions are all about. How this all hangs together can sometimes be fairly confusing for many photographers ( Me included ! ) , and the idea is to demystify this, and make this accessible to everyone.
It’s a useful point for all of the members to get some new ideas of how this is done, and the talk is being delivered by some of our most experienced members.
At the end we are going to make the awards for the 2016-17 season, delayed from the Annual Dinner.
The Agenda is
- Overview and Preparation of Images Helen – 20 Mins
- Printing & Mounting Ian Practical 30 – 45 Mins
- So what’s competitions all about Simon - 15 Mins
- 2017 Awards 10 – 15 Minutes
As normal we meet at the Thomas Cook Memorial Hall [TCMH] starting at 7:30 pm. We hope to see you there

Welcome Night , Thursday 21st September 17
Thank you to everyone who came along on Thursday night , both potential new members along with existing society members. It was the most tremendous turnout for the first night of the season, and great to see so many new faces. We look forward to meeting you again in the coming weeks.
Tomorrow sees the start of the season for Melbourne Photographic Society. This event is set-up for those of you who may be interested in joining the society and to find out how to get more out of your Camera. You will be able to find out what we do as a society, and get information on our programme and activities, and understand how it can help you develop.
We have set the evening up this year to be more accessible rather than a more formal introduction, and will allow you to talk with the members and understand what we are doing and see if this would suit you. We are a very friendly and informal bunch of photographers, who cover many of the different type of photography between us. You don’t have to be an expert photographer to attend, we can help you develop your skills and advance your skills, as many of us have done since joining. You don’t have to live in Melbourne either, its open to anyone who is interested in photography and wants to meeting with people with a similar interest.
The sessions around the room will cover
- This Years Programme
- Planned Trips & outings
- The Society and Exhibitions
- ‘How to ‘ Sessions and Mentoring. Come with some ideas of what you would like to learn
- A slideshow of last years competition entries
This evening also allows the current membership to catch on what they have been doing during the summer and to hear about the new programme for 2017 – 2018
There are no fees tomorrow night, and no pressure to join. We operate a try before you buy approach, and you can attend as a visitor with a small fee each week from next week onwards. If you choose to join you will be credited against the fees paid.
The session will start at 7:30 pm and will end around 09:15 – 09:30 pm followed by a wander to one of the local hostelries.
We look forward to seeing you there.
From Sharon Brown, Melbourne Festival
I know it is short notice but People Express are arranging a FREE Photography Workshop for the Festival next Saturday afternoon (2nd September) as part of the joint project about Melbourne Market Gardeners which we are working on.
The session will be led by Christopher Mear a young documentary photographer who we have commissioned to photograph the market gardens and the produce they grow throughout the year.
Everyone will meet at Melbourne Assembly at 2pm and walk across Brown’s field to Heaths at Woodhouses and Photograph produce in Heaths field.
I have attached the flyer which has a few more details. FLOL leaflet
Please contact Sharon Brown ( firstname.lastname@example.org ) if anybody would like to reserve a place.
This will be held at the same venue as last year.
This is a very prestigious event and gives us our chance to promote the club and show off our work, to improve local awareness and to help gain new members.
Gaining new members is really important for the club as it keeps the club vibrant, plus if we have more members we are more secure financially. As it is an all weekend event we really need some more help from the membership. To make sure this runs smoothly we need club members to volunteer their time (1 – 2 hours) to assist with this exhibition.
We are looking for the following:-
- To help set the stand on Friday evening the prints need to be put into frames and hanging, plus putting up the gazebo.
- To man the stand on Saturday.
- To man the stand on Sunday.
- Then dismantle the stand after 17:00hrs on Sunday and return boards etc. to Thomas Cook hall.
We also need you to submit your images to display.
We are arranging a collection of your prints at Harpers on Thursday 14th September at 21:00hrs. If you cannot make it to Harper’s you can please let me know by email, we will try and collect them from you. Please contact me at the following e-mail address (email@example.com or Paul (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your offers of help so that I can plan the weekend.
We will be running the Tombola again, as this raised £200.00 last year, which was a big boost to funds. So please can you donate any suitable items.
Why not come along and support the event. Our two ambassadors, Alan and Lorraine will be there.
